Wanted: Donators’ Names for Sale

Why Your Name May be found among the Many Donators’ Names for Sale

When you donate money to a charity, you’d like to assume that charity would respect your privacy. That, however, isn’t always the case. Putting donators’ names up for sale has become a regular occurrence with modern charities. If you get unsolicited mailings from charities that you have never even heard of, you might be surprised to discover exactly how they got your information. Many charities offer donators’ names for sale, and there are some important things you need to know before you make your next donation.

Is Your Name on a Mailing List

If you have been bombarded with unsolicited mailings requesting that you make charitable contributions, you might be wondering why you’ve been getting them. The fact is, many charities regularly send out donation requests to people on mailing lists. You’re probably wondering where the charities get their lists from. The answer is other charities that provide donators’ names for sale!

Why Do They Do It?

Charities are hoping that if you previously donated to a similar cause in the past, you might also be willing to donate to their charity. Because of this, they’re willing to pay charities that have similar causes for a list of their donators. They then create a donation request campaign and send out donation requests to the names on the list.

Protect Your Privacy

The next time you make a donation to a charity, ask about the charity’s privacy policy. Many charities sell the names, addresses, and phone numbers of individuals who have given them donations. They do this to generate extra income, and selling donors’ names to other charities is a quick way to make money. If you don’t want your name to be one of those sold, specifically ask that the charity not sell your name or personal information when you donate to the cause. A charity obviously wants and needs your donation, so they will usually comply with your request.
