Moving the Right Way

What are Your Options When You are Moving?

If you’re thinking of moving in the upcoming year or two, now would be a good time to consider options for moving your possessions. Moving isn’t cheap, and there are multiple options on the market. Depending on your preferences and lifestyle, you might be better suited for one moving option in lieu of another. Below you’ll learn about different moving options and how to determine which option is right for you.

Do-It-Yourself Move

There are still many consumers who plan and complete their move from one home to another on their very own without hiring a moving company. This option is great for individuals with a large family or many friends who they previously helped to move in the past. You can rent a truck for a decent rate, and everyone can pitch in to help you load up the truck.

As long as you have all your possessions packed ahead of time, this option can go rather quickly with a handful of individuals helping.

Shop around for deals. Many times truck rentals require the consumer to pay per mile. If you are moving a far distance, renting a truck might not be your cheapest option.

Portable Storage

There is a concept in moving that is gaining popularity: portable storage. Companies like PODS deliver a very large container to the consumer’s house. If you opt for a company like PODS, you can load up the unit at your leisure and schedule the date you want the unit picked up.

The only downside is that there is usually a lag between when the unit is picked up and when it can be delivered to your new location. This can be inconvenient for a large family who might have difficulty roughing it for a few days without many of their personal items. However, this option can cost less than hiring a moving company, which is why many people prefer it. The initial fee you pay usually involves storage of your unit for up to thirty days.

Moving Company

A moving company is usually the most expensive option, but it can save you a lot of headaches, especially if you don’t have enough individuals to help you out or you physically aren’t able to move heavy items.

Keep in mind that you can receive tax deductions if the reason for your move is because you are changing jobs. If you receive a moving package from the company you are going to be working for, then you won’t be eligible for a tax deduction.
