How to Save on Heating Bills

It's always a good idea to save on heating. Not only will you help the environment and reduce emissions, you'll save a lot of money on heating bills. Depending where you live, winter can be a very expensive time -- and the longer it lasts, the more frustrating those sky high bills become.

Fortunately, there are some very simple ways to save heat -- things any family can put into practice to save money and help the earth. You'll be going green in more ways than one!

Ways to save on heat

Here are some easy tips to help you save on heating bills and energy costs.

1. Put on a sweater. Encourage family members to head for the closet before the thermostat, and keep piles of warm, cozy blankets on chairs and couches. You don't need to keep your home at an uncomfortably cold temperature, but lowering it a degree or two can make a big difference. Put it this way: if putting on a sweater would take care of the chill, that's what you should do. If you're shivering and your toes are numb, turn up the heat.

2. Install a programmable thermostat. They are surprisingly easy to use and install (just about anyone can do it) and can save you hundreds of dollars a year by regulating heat at night, when you're at work, and while you're on vacation.

3. Have furnace filters cleaned regularly, both for safety and efficiency.

4. Check for drafts. You can get inexpensive weather stripping or winter plastic to put over windows where cold air seeps in. It's amazing what a difference it can make -- you'll save a bundle on heating bills when you eliminate drafts.

5. Heat areas you're using. If the entire family gathers in the living room at night, close off vents in other areas of the house -- or better yet, turn down the thermostat and turn on a space heater. You can get space heaters that mimic fireplaces for a warm, cozy feel.

You can also use other little tricks to keep your home warmer. For example, when you finish making supper, leave the oven open while you eat. The warm air from the oven will circulate through the house (turn the oven off, obviously -- we're reusing leftover heat, not paying to turn your oven into a space heater).

These five small changes will make a big difference on your global impact as well as your financial budget. With only a few alterations to your lifestyle, you can easily save on heating this winter!
