Generic Groceries and National Brands

Can Generic Groceries Really Live Up to Your Expectations?

The next time you are shopping for groceries, consider purchasing the generic brand. While there are some items that are not comparable, a surprisingly large amount of items are just as good as the national brands. Keep the following in mind when shopping for groceries.

Don’t Fall For The Marketing

With all the television advertisements and magazine ads we see daily, we almost always reach for the name brand when we are shopping for groceries. However, many generic products are just as good as the name brand, and some generic brands are actually manufactured by the same companies that manufacture the brand names!

Do Your Homework

Take a look at ingredient labels of products that you frequently purchase. Compare the generic product labels side-by-side with the name brand labels and see what differences, if any, you notice. You might be surprised to find, that in many cases, there will be no difference at all.

See For Yourself

You likely won’t notice any considerable difference in taste or quality for certain products like cereal, grape jelly, ketchup, or canned soup. For some products, however, you might want to stick with your predictable national brand, such as toothpaste, peanut butter, or hair gel. When you are shopping for groceries, buy generic brands for items for which you don’t really have an absolute preference. Most consumers buy the national brand out of habit, not necessarily because they believe it is superior in taste, quality, or performance. Substitute the generic brand for a few national brand products that you can live without. Over time you can increase your purchase of generic products and save yourself a lot of money in the process.

Sometimes It Pays To Pay More

There still may be some products for which you’ll always prefer the national brand, and that is understandable. Simply limit your purchase of national brands to about five total products per shopping trip. If you substitute generic products for the national brands for most of the items on your shopping list, you will inevitably find that shopping for groceries does not have to be as costly as it usually is.
