Do You Have What It Takes to Make It Through the Winter Storms?

Getting Through the Winter Storms

If you live in an area where the winter storms are hitting hard, there are some things you need to know to get through the blustery months ahead. How do you find salt when everyone is sold out? What do you need to survive a power outage? These are the issues winter storms bring to the forefront and here are some practical solutions to get you through.

The Salt Dilemma

In our area salt is scarce and stores are running out faster than they can get it in. This is a serious problem when you consider all of the ice on the ground. What's a homeowner to do?

Believe it or not, your local pet store might be the answer. Everyone runs to grocery stores, gas stations and even drug stores looking for ice-melting salt when the winter storms hit. How many people actually think about a pet supply store?

Why, you ask, would a pet supply store have salt for your driveway? Because pet-safe salt is a must for many pet owners. Yes, it's more expensive but if there's no other salt to be had in your neighborhood, you might be willing to pay the premium.

When the Power Goes Out

When it comes to winter storms, power outages are not uncommon. There are some things you absolutely must have on hand when this happens.

First and foremost, flashlights (preferably crank-powered flashlights or LED flashlights) are a must. Candles are a fire hazard so they really aren't a great lighting choice.

Another thing you should have on hand is a weather radio. I personally suggest a crank-powered weather radio that has a built-in flashlight and cell phone charger. They can be a life-saver in times of crisis.

Keep Your Car Stocked

When it comes to winter storms your car should also be properly equipped. Keep at least one or two thermal blankets in there along with road flares, a first aid kit, a phone charger that plugs into your cigarette lighter and always bring a bottle of water with you when you go out.

Winter storms can be a dangerous thing but we've been dealing with them throughout history. By keeping the above things in mind and planning properly, they don't have to take you unprepared and by surprise.
