Do Employee Discounts Lead to the Best Savings?

A Spotlight on Employee Discounts

Employee discounts are a very popular perk that many retail stores offer. They create a win-win situation where the employee gets a discount while the stores increase their sales. However, some employee discounts are just marginal and non-employees basically get the same discounts with a coupon from the weekend paper. If you want to learn more about employee discounts, read more below.

Are The Discounts Worth It?

Is a consumer wise to get a part time job with the primary objective to take advantage of the employee discount? There are a few things you must consider to determine if this is a wise decision.

First you must verify that the discount is available to part time employees. Also, you must verify that the discount does not have restrictions such as a limit of usage. In other words, some discounts may have the limitation only allowing you to use up to a certain amount each week or some stores may have a rather long exclusion list. Instead of 25% off purchases, items on this list may only provide a 5% discount.

Another factor you want to take into consideration is the size of the employee discount. This varies from store to store. Some stores offer employee discounts of 40 percent while others only offer 5 or 10 percent discounts.

Earning To Spend?

You also need to take into account whether the discount will lead to overspending. If this is the case, you should avoid taking the job with the primary objective of maximizing the discount. Because this will lead to having most of your wages going to pay for your purchases that you probably don’t need anyway.

Overspending is an easy thing to do; therefore, you must have good discipline when you have access to extra income and employee discounts.
