5 Items That Make Your Home Insurance Bill Sky High

You haven't filed a claim in years and yet your insurance bill is sky high. To most homeowners, this just doesn't make sense. To insurance agents, it does. There are 5 things that will immediately raise your insurance rates. Learn what they are and how to avoid them.

Item #1 -- Swimming pools

Swimming pools are a major source of injury and death every year. Pools are responsible for an estimated 250 deaths of children under the age of 5 and treatment of 1600 children for injuries in emergency rooms each year. Most of the deaths and injuries occur in residential pools causing home insurance bills to automatically go up if you own a pool.

Item #2 -- Hot tubs

Hot tubs are almost equal to swimming pools when it comes to drowning accidents. One fifth of the drowning deaths are children under the age of five with the rest being adults that slipped and fell into the hot tub, fell asleep due to hot temperatures and drowned, or alcohol related deaths in the hot tub. Hair entanglement is responsible for dozens of serious injuries each year with some leading to death.

Item #3 -- Trampolines

With over 250,000 trampoline injuries occurring every year, trampolines are an insurance agent's nightmare. Many home insurance companies won't even insure your home if you own a trampoline.

Item #4 -- Dangerous conditions at your home

You know the old saying, "Most accidents happen at home." Unfortunately, this is true. When insurance agents inspect your home, they look for things like cracked steps or low spots where ice can form causing a fall and injury. Prepare the home before calling your agent. And repair any problems where potential injuries can occur.

Item #5 -- Dogs

Americans love their dogs but insurance agents don't -- at least when it comes to insuring your home. Non-aggressive breeds are generally okay but aggressive breeds like Pit Bulls, Rottweilers, Doberman Pinschers, and Wolf breeds are a definite no-no.

If you are in the market for home owner's insurance or would just like to get a reasonable rate, review this list. If you own a pool, hot tub, trampoline, aggressive dog, or need to make repairs do what you can before your agent comes to inspect your home. By doing so, you can greatly reduce your home insurance bill.
